CHAPTER 7

INSIDE

THE CONDUCTOR'S MIND

“To achieve great things, two things are needed: a plan, and not quite enough time.” Leonard Bernstein

During a performance, what goes on in the conductor’s mind? Not many jobs are as demanding and complex, or ask for higher levels of responsibility and authority as conducting. Music performance is a single experience. There are no second opportunities. Conductors face the challenge that during this single experience they motivate and inspire musicians to channel all their energy towards a successful performance outcome. Focus, power, amazing energy are necessary to pull off something like that. Are there any additional skills required to perform this unique feat? Searching to understand what shapes up a good conductor, we come across a set of abilities that may further explain their successful leadership style. We will find them in the conductor’s mind.

Why are some conductors better leaders than others? What inner power differentiates them? Is it talent, education, hard work and/or a bit of luck? A look into the mindset of excellent conductors reveals that though every successful conductor is unique in his own way, they do share a set of inner qualities. These qualities are prevalent in excellent leadership.

Chapter 7 Inside the Conductor's Mind

Discipline

Discipline is key to success in any field. Reading and listening to top performers in music, sport, science or industries, one realizes that success is a result of strong commitment and discipline, sometimes a lifetime spent in training and learning. Conductors embrace discipline early on in their music education. Understanding that their profession includes a complex set of roles and responsibilities, discipline ensures good planning and organisation.

BY SETTING AN EXAMPLE OF DISCIPLINED LEADERSHIP, CONDUCTORS ARE ABLE TO EARN TRUST AND RESPECT, CONVINCE MUSICIANS THAT THEIR LEADERSHIP STYLE IS RELIABLE AND RESPONSIBLE.

Knowing this, musicians are happier, motivated and empowered to deliver their best.

Concentration and Focus

The best music conductors possess an amazing ability to concentrate and focus. With the complex music score in front of them, they need to communicate their ideas and vision to the orchestra, transmitting concentration and focus to the musicians themselves. As a result, musicians are more engaged in the process, paying higher attention to the conductor, their roles and to other section roles in the orchestra. This dynamic engages the audience too, which in turn feels that something very important is going on.
